GJA Deploys Volunteers and Sets Up Collation Centre for Transparent 2024 Election Results
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has launched an initiative ahead of the December 7 elections, deploying volunteers across all 276 constituencies in Ghana and establishing a central hub at the Ghana International Press Centre. These volunteers will be tasked with collecting and collating results as they come in from polling stations nationwide. Additionally, a platform has been set up to project both provisional and certified results on giant monitors at the Press Centre. This setup aims to provide real-time updates to the media, political actors, and the public, ensuring transparency and accessibility during the election process.
Kofi Yeboah, the General Secretary of the GJA, explained that the initiative includes not only result collection but also observation of the general conduct of the elections. The volunteers will report any infractions against media practitioners, allowing the GJA to quickly address concerns and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Furthermore, the GJA has established a seven-member Election Monitoring Team responsible for compiling a comprehensive report on the elections’ outcome. This team will ensure a thorough review and documentation of any irregularities, thereby safeguarding the credibility of the elections.
In support of the initiative, the GJA has designated the Gifty Afenyi Dadzie Conference Hall at the Press Centre as a prime location for press conferences on election-related matters. This central location provides convenience to political actors and the media for discussing election issues and sharing information with the public. The GJA has also engaged extensively with political parties and media managers to gain their endorsement and support for this initiative, demonstrating a collaborative approach to managing the elections. With 9,009 media accreditation tags distributed as of December 5, 2024, including 100 tags for foreign journalists, the GJA is well-prepared to oversee and report on the elections, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to timely and accurate information.
