WASSCE 2024: WAEC Delays Results Over GH¢118 Million Government Debt
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the delay in releasing the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is due to the government’s outstanding debt of GH¢118 million. This significant delay has left thousands of students and parents across Ghana frustrated and anxious about their future academic and career plans.
According to WAEC, the debt has made it difficult for the council to complete the process of marking and releasing the results. WAEC officials stated that while marking has been completed, the lack of funds has stalled critical post-marking processes such as data processing and result validation.
The Head of WAEC's Public Affairs, John Kapi, explained, “We understand the inconvenience this is causing to students and their families, but the council has incurred significant costs and cannot proceed until the outstanding debt is settled.”
The delayed results have far-reaching consequences for students who need their certificates to apply to universities, both locally and abroad. Some educational institutions have already set deadlines for admissions, making the situation even more urgent. Parents and guardians have voiced concerns, calling on the government to prioritize the payment and ensure that their children’s academic progress is not jeopardized.
Government representatives have acknowledged the issue and assured the public that efforts are being made to settle the debt. However, no clear timeline has been given for the payment. The Ministry of Education, in a brief statement, said, “We are aware of the challenges and are committed to resolving the matter soon.”
This is not the first time WAEC has faced such financial challenges. In previous years, similar delays have occurred due to unpaid debts, raising questions about sustainable funding for the council and the reliability of examination processes.
Students affected by this delay have taken to social media to express their frustration. Some are using hashtags like #ReleaseWASSCE2024 to call attention to the issue, demanding immediate action from the government.
The situation remains tense as stakeholders await a resolution. Many hope that the government will expedite the payment to prevent further disruptions to the academic calendar.
