President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s religious leaders to support him as he prepares to meet the high expectations of the people following his resounding victory in the 2024 elections.
During a courtesy call by the Assemblies of God Church, led by its General Superintendent Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, Mahama acknowledged the trust placed in him by Ghanaians. The meeting was attended by First Lady Lordina Mahama and former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.
“The overwhelming endorsement I received reflects the hope and trust of Ghanaians,” Mahama said. “I understand the enormous responsibility this brings, and I appeal to all religious leaders to join me in guiding our nation toward peace and prosperity.”
Expressing his appreciation for the church’s unwavering support, Mahama credited their prayers and encouragement for his resilience in both his personal and political life.
“I deeply value the Assemblies of God Church and the broader religious community for standing by me. Your prayers have been my strength,” he said. “As I take on this mandate, I assure the nation of leadership grounded in honesty and integrity. Together, we will work toward a better future for all Ghanaians.”
Mahama emphasized the need for collective efforts in addressing the nation’s challenges, urging religious leaders to continue praying for the nation’s progress.
“This journey will not be easy, but with unity and the guidance of our faith-based institutions, I am confident we can overcome any obstacle,” he noted.
Rev. Wengam offered prayers for the president-elect, his family, and his administration, asking for divine wisdom and strength. He presented Mahama with a Bible and other spiritual materials to serve as a compass for his leadership.
“May God grant you the wisdom to lead with righteousness and the strength to meet the needs of the people,” Rev. Wengam said.
Mahama also briefly addressed concerns surrounding the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, assuring the religious leaders that he would approach the issue thoughtfully and in alignment with the nation’s values.
“I am mindful of the sensitivity of this matter. Rest assured, my decisions will reflect the values and aspirations of our people,” he said.
As Ghana’s president-elect prepares to lead, his call for partnership with the religious community underscores his commitment to fostering unity and meeting the expectations of Ghanaians.
