Kwesi Appiah has provided insights into his recent appointment as the Head of Sporting Affairs for Asante Kotoko, clarifying the circumstances that led to his new role. Following the dissolution of Dr Kwame Kyei’s board and Nana Yaw Amponsah’s management team, the club’s life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, established an Interim Management Committee (IMC) with Appiah initially named as the club’s technical director. However, in November, a club announcement revealed that former coach and club legend Malik Jabir had been appointed to fill the technical director role instead. This decision came as Appiah faced challenges balancing his duties as the head coach of the Sudanese national team with his responsibilities at Kotoko.
In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Kwesi Appiah explained that his primary focus had to remain with Sudan, making it difficult to commit fully to the technical director position at Asante Kotoko. He admitted that while he had initially accepted the role, his frequent absences due to international duty were not conducive to the club’s needs. To maintain stability and provide the necessary support for head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, the decision was made to appoint Malik Jabir. Appiah stressed that Jabir’s experience coaching various national teams made him the ideal candidate to step in and oversee the technical aspects of the club, ensuring continuity in the coaching staff and strategy.
Appiah also mentioned the future plan to appoint an assistant technical director who would work closely with Malik Jabir. This assistant would be responsible for overseeing the team when Jabir could not travel with the squad. The goal was to ensure that there was always a knowledgeable figure available to guide the team’s tactical decisions, particularly during critical matches. This adjustment in the technical director role underscores the importance of having a structured support system in place, especially given the challenges Appiah faces with his commitments to Sudan’s national team. As Asante Kotoko prepares to face their fierce rivals Hearts of Oak in the Matchday 13 fixture of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League, Appiah’s focus remains on ensuring the club’s technical and strategic integrity during a period of transition.
