Nine suspects have been remanded in police custody by the Tamale District Magistrate Court for allegedly vandalizing a Volvo motor grader with registration number GC1705Z, belonging to businessman Wahid Yakubu. The court has scheduled their next appearance for December 19, 2024.
The accused individuals include Yabuku Abdul Malik, 20, a welder; Mohammed Yakubu, 25, a mechanic; Ibrahim Seidu, 23, a mechanic; Zaid Abubakari, 30, a porter; Seidu Mufaz, 20, a welder; Abubakar Hafiz, 30, a welder; Imoro Suleimana, 29, a scrap dealer; Abdul Aziz Alhassan, 30, a painter; and Iddrisu Issah, 51, a mechanic.
According to police reports, the suspects invaded the site where the vehicle was undergoing repairs in Zogbeli. They allegedly claimed the grader was government property and argued it should be confiscated following the recent change in administration.
The Northern Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit, which made the arrests, recovered several tools from the suspects, including five gas cylinders with pipes, two hammers, a chisel, and other mechanical implements. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities are working to identify additional culprits involved in the act.
In a similar development, three individuals have also been remanded by the same court for looting furniture from Cotton Company Limited. This follows reports of widespread looting and vandalism targeting state properties in the Northern Region since the change in government.
District assemblies, government warehouses, the veterinary department, agricultural offices, and even residences of government officials have been affected. The looting spree has raised concerns about escalating lawlessness in the region.
President-elect John Dramani Mahama, alongside other stakeholders, has appealed for calm and urged citizens to respect the rule of law. He emphasized that while political transitions are natural, they should not be marred by violence or unlawful acts.
Despite these calls, the unrest persists, with youth groups yet to heed the appeals for restraint. Political analysts and community leaders have expressed concerns about the implications of such incidents on the country’s democratic stability.
The growing unrest underscores the need for urgent interventions to restore order and ensure that political transitions are smooth and peaceful. Authorities have assured the public that ongoing investigations will bring all offenders to justice.
