NHIS Free Dialysis Rollout in Northern Region: Tamale and Other Hospitals Named

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has taken a significant step in improving healthcare access by announcing the rollout of free dialysis treatment in selected hospitals in the Northern Region, including Tamale. This initiative aims to provide crucial support to patients suffering from kidney-related diseases who struggle with the high cost of dialysis treatment.

In a move to reduce the financial burden on patients, the NHIS has designated specific hospitals in the Northern Region that will offer these services. This follows a broader government commitment to ensuring affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians, particularly those battling chronic illnesses like kidney failure, which requires regular dialysis sessions to manage.

Tamale Teaching Hospital has been named as one of the key facilities in this rollout. As the leading healthcare provider in the region, it is well-equipped to offer quality dialysis care. Other regional and district hospitals are also expected to participate, ensuring that patients in rural and urban areas alike can access life-saving treatment without excessive costs.

Patients undergoing dialysis typically require at least two to three sessions per week, with each session costing between GHC 300 and GHC 400. For many families, this cost is unsustainable over the long term. The NHIS initiative aims to alleviate this burden, ensuring that no one is denied treatment due to financial constraints.

Residents in the Northern Region have welcomed the announcement with relief and optimism. Mohammed Salifu, a patient in Tamale, expressed his gratitude: “This is a huge relief for me and my family. The cost of dialysis has been draining us, but now we have hope.”

However, some challenges remain, including the availability of dialysis machines and trained personnel. Many healthcare professionals are calling for continuous investment in equipment and staff training to make the program effective and sustainable. Dr. Afisah Zakariah, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, assured the public that the government is committed to supporting this initiative with the necessary resources.

The NHIS free dialysis rollout is part of a larger effort to strengthen Ghana's healthcare system and ensure equitable access to critical treatments across all regions. As more hospitals come on board, the hope is that kidney disease patients nationwide will benefit from similar programs.
