President-elect John Dramani Mahama has issued a clear warning to those aspiring to serve in his incoming administration, emphasizing that only individuals committed to serving the nation with humility and diligence will be considered. Speaking at a thanksgiving service on December 15, 2024, held at the Assemblies of God Ringway Gospel Centre in Accra, Mahama called on potential appointees to put the welfare of Ghanaians above personal ambitions.
Addressing the increasing pressure from individuals lobbying for positions, Mahama stated:
"I have been receiving knocks on my door, text messages from people who are considering themselves for various positions, and I just want to warn them that it is not going to be a walk in the park. If you are not willing to serve the people diligently with modesty and humility, then don’t come. Just stay where you are."
This stern declaration highlights his commitment to building an accountable government focused on addressing the needs of the people.
Reflecting on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections, Mahama pointed to the lessons it offers, particularly for leaders entering public office. He reminded his team that the electorate holds ultimate power and will not hesitate to reject any administration that fails to meet their expectations.
"Just as our colleagues in the NPP might be feeling very pained by their loss, it should serve as a lesson to those of us coming to government. The same stick that Takyi has been beaten with, the Ghanaian people are reserving it for Baah," he remarked, underscoring the risks of complacency and arrogance in leadership.
Mahama further acknowledged that arrogance and self-interest have become entrenched among political elites, himself included. He urged leaders to remember that power is temporary and derived from the people.
"We’ve practised democracy since 1992. Over time, the political elites, including myself, have grown in arrogance and selfishness. We believed that the power we wielded belonged to us, forgetting that it is God who has given it to us temporarily."
The President-elect called on his administration to embrace humility, learn from past mistakes, and focus on serving Ghanaians rather than pursuing personal gains. He stressed that public office is not a privilege for self-enrichment but an opportunity to bring meaningful change to the lives of citizens.
