CHASS Urges Immediate Release of Funds to Schools
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has called on the government to expedite the release of overdue funds to senior high schools across the country. This pressing appeal was made during a recent meeting where CHASS highlighted the dire financial challenges facing many institutions.
According to CHASS, delays in the disbursement of funds are crippling the effective running of schools, leaving administrators struggling to provide essential services. They noted that schools are unable to meet their operational costs, including the purchase of teaching materials, food supplies for students, and payment of utility bills.
A CHASS spokesperson lamented that some schools are operating on credit, a situation they described as unsustainable. “We are at a breaking point. Schools cannot continue to function under these conditions,” the representative stated.
The group also expressed concerns about the impact of these financial difficulties on the quality of education. “If this situation persists, it will affect academic performance and the overall well-being of our students,” the spokesperson warned.
CHASS has appealed to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to prioritize the release of funds, especially as schools prepare for end-of-term activities and the next academic calendar. They emphasized that timely funding is essential to maintaining the smooth running of schools and ensuring that students receive the quality education they deserve.
Parents and education stakeholders have also been urged to join CHASS in advocating for a swift resolution to this issue. Many fear that continued delays could disrupt academic programs and compromise the Free Senior High School policy, which has been a flagship initiative of the government.
The Ministry of Education is yet to respond to CHASS’s concerns. However, sources within the ministry suggest that efforts are underway to address the funding gaps.
The situation has sparked widespread debate, with some accusing the government of neglecting the education sector, while others have called for improved financial management systems to prevent such delays in the future.
