According to a report by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United has made selling Jadon Sancho their priority this summer. Sancho joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of £75 million in July 2021. However, trouble officially began for the English winger after he was dropped by Erik ten Hag, then United's head coach, for a match against Arsenal in 2023.
Ten Hag cited Sancho’s lateness to training, among other reasons, for excluding him from the squad. In response, Sancho took to social media to call out Ten Hag, stating that he would not be made a "scapegoat." He later deleted all pictures of himself in a Manchester United jersey.
We all know that openly calling out your boss—whether you're right or wrong—is usually a bad idea. Sancho, who hadn’t performed consistently enough to justify his hefty price tag, failed to gain fan support over the manager. He wasn’t considered "untouchable" and was consequently dropped from the first team, banned from using first-team facilities, and even removed from the team's WhatsApp group, as reported by The Mirror UK.
He was later sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund, but the club chose not to buy him. On the final day of last summer's transfer window, he was quickly loaned to Chelsea with an obligation to buy for £25 million. However, it seems Manchester United mismanaged the business side of the deal—especially for a player they were keen to offload to reduce their wage bill. The obligation reportedly included a £5 million cancellation fee, which Chelsea must pay if they renege on the agreement to buy the winger, according to David Ornstein.
Chelsea wanted to keep the winger, but he needed to agree to a significant wage cut to fit into Chelsea’s incentive-based wage structure. Sancho refused to reduce his salary and is now on his way back to Manchester United. However, his name was notably absent from the list of players whose names were available for printing on Manchester United jerseys.
United's priority now is to sell him permanently, with Napoli and clubs from Saudi Arabia showing significant interest.
