Joseph Ade Coker, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has attributed the party's decisive victory in the 2024 elections to the extensive campaign efforts of President-elect John Mahama and the perceived arrogance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In an interview on Citi FM, Coker praised Mahama for his tireless campaigning, noting that over the past two to three years, he toured the entire country multiple times, visiting all 276 constituencies and 16 regions. Coker emphasized that Mahama's consistent efforts to engage directly with Ghanaians were pivotal in delivering his message and sharing his vision for the nation's future. Mahama's commitment to understanding the needs of the people and promising positive changes resonated with voters across the country.
Coker also highlighted the growing discontent among the Ghanaian public, especially in regard to the NPP's management of the economy. He pointed out the economic struggles, such as the controversial debt restructuring, which led to Ghana's financial difficulties. Coker argued that this economic mismanagement, combined with the NPP’s arrogant attitude toward the people, played a significant role in fueling anger and frustration among voters. He claimed that the NPP failed to address the public’s concerns and became disconnected from the needs of the average Ghanaian. As a result, this dissatisfaction created a perfect opportunity for the NDC to appeal to the electorate, with Mahama offering a clear alternative and promising better governance.
Additionally, Coker mentioned that the NPP's handling of the people, marked by arrogance and a failure to connect with ordinary Ghanaians, further compounded their problems. Many Ghanaians felt disregarded and disrespected by the government, which only intensified their desire for a change in leadership. According to Coker, Mahama’s continuous outreach and focus on a hopeful future contrasted sharply with the NPP's approach, which contributed to the NDC’s success. The combination of Mahama's efforts, the economic difficulties faced by the country, and the NPP's perceived arrogance led to a massive shift in voter sentiment. Coker believes that this shift was a clear indication that Ghanaians wanted a change and were ready to embrace the NDC's vision for the future.
