WASSCE 2024: WAEC Releases Results After Delay, Cancels Subject Results of Over 4,000 Candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) after a significant delay. The announcement came as a relief to candidates and parents who had been eagerly awaiting the results for weeks.

However, the release was not without controversy, as WAEC revealed that the subject results of over 4,000 candidates had been canceled due to various instances of examination malpractice. According to WAEC, these malpractices ranged from bringing foreign materials into the examination hall to collusion among candidates.

In a statement issued by the council, WAEC emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the examinations. “We will continue to ensure that our processes remain credible and that the certificates we issue are valued and trusted,” the statement read.

This year’s exams saw an increase in cases of malpractice compared to previous years, with WAEC attributing this trend to the growing use of technology to facilitate cheating. In response, the council intensified its monitoring efforts by deploying supervisors and leveraging digital tools to track irregularities.

Meanwhile, the council also reported an overall improvement in the performance of candidates. Approximately 62% of candidates achieved the minimum pass grade in at least six subjects, including Mathematics and English Language. This marks a slight increase from the 59% recorded in 2023.

Candidates can check their results online using the WAEC result checker portal by entering their index numbers and PIN codes. Those who experience issues with accessing their results have been advised to contact WAEC's support team for assistance.

The news has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some candidates are celebrating their success, others have expressed disappointment and frustration over the cancellations. Parents and education stakeholders have called on WAEC to take further steps to curb malpractice and ensure fairness in future examinations.
