George Afriyie Urges Kurt Okraku to Address Football Manipulation After Black Galaxies' CHAN Setback
In the wake of the Black Galaxies' failure to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has urged GFA President Kurt Okraku to take decisive action against manipulation in Ghanaian football. The Black Galaxies, who were expected to qualify for the tournament after drawing 0-0 in the first leg against Nigeria, suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss in the return leg in Uyo. Afriyie expressed his frustration over the outcome but acknowledged the efforts of head coach Mas Ud Didi Dramani, whom he considers one of the country’s top coaches.
Despite Ghana's considerable talent pool, Afriyie pointed out that issues such as match manipulation are contributing to the failure of the national teams. He believes that until these problems are tackled, Ghana’s football teams will continue to face obstacles in achieving success on the international stage. Afriyie called for immediate intervention from the GFA, urging Kurt Okraku to take a stronger stance in rooting out corruption and manipulation, which have been undermining the potential of the country's national teams.
Afriyie’s comments come amid a broader crisis in Ghanaian football, with the Black Stars, the senior national team, also failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This marks the first time in over two decades that the Black Stars will miss the prestigious tournament, which will be held in Morocco later this year. Afriyie’s plea for a change in the administration's approach is indicative of growing concerns among football enthusiasts that unless the manipulation and corruption plaguing the sport are addressed, Ghana will continue to miss opportunities to perform at its best.
