The outcome of Dome/Kwabenya parliamentary election reflects the will of the people – Jean Mensa

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Faustina Elikplim Akurugu as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome/Kwabenya constituency after resolving contentious electoral issues.

During an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that the electoral process in the constituency had been finalized. She emphasized that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed during the polls.

“Today, the Commission is pleased to note that it has concluded proceedings and collation in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency,” Mensa stated. “We are convinced, without a shadow of a doubt, that the outcome reflects the people’s choice.”

She further clarified that the EC’s priority is not to favor any candidate but to ensure credible and transparent elections. “Our interest is not to make any president but to ensure our outcomes guarantee the people’s choice,” she said.

The resolution stemmed from challenges at the Abokobi Women’s Training Center polling station, where a pink sheet meant for presidential training mistakenly appeared. Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lacked evidence to verify the results. After investigation, the EC decided to rerun the election at that polling station to ensure fairness.

Jean Mensa explained that neither party had the necessary pink sheets, and the rerun was agreed upon during discussions with the NDC. However, the NPP expressed concerns about their agents’ absence during the collation process.

Following further investigations, the EC reached out to party agents and the presiding officer from the polling station. The presiding officer revealed that the training pink sheet was used due to the absence of a parliamentary pink sheet. After tallying the results, both party agents confirmed the figures but were unable to transport the results due to an attack by unidentified individuals, forcing the presiding officer to flee with the sheet.

The EC concluded that the missing parliamentary pink sheet and the lack of signed party agreements necessitated the rerun. This rerun and subsequent collation confirmed the election’s legitimacy, resolving the long-standing dispute.

This declaration marks the end of the intense competition between the NDC and NPP for the Dome/Kwabenya seat.
