Juventus Take a Risk After Thiago Motta’s Costly Tenure

Juventus have rolled the dice on their immediate future, parting ways with Thiago Motta in a desperate bid to salvage their season, secure Champions League qualification, and attract a high-profile manager to correct a series of costly mistakes.

Motta’s dismissal on Sunday was the result of poor performances, strained relationships with club management and players, and a failure to deliver on the promise of revitalizing the team. Once again, the "Old Lady" of Italian football finds itself in turmoil, with yet another managerial change disrupting any sense of stability.

The former Italy international was meant to symbolize a fresh start for Juventus, a club trying to distance itself from recent scandals, financial losses, and on-field struggles. His appointment last July came with high expectations, particularly after his impressive work at Bologna, where he guided them into the Champions League. However, Motta’s tenure in Turin quickly unraveled.

Juve’s recent history has been plagued by setbacks, including a points deduction for financial irregularities, Paul Pogba’s doping controversy, and the resurgence of rivals like Inter Milan, AC Milan, Napoli, and Atalanta, all of whom have overshadowed Italy’s most decorated club.

With the backing of over €200 million in new signings—including expensive acquisitions like Teun Koopmeiners and Douglas Luiz—Motta was tasked with transforming Juve into a more dynamic, modern team after years of pragmatic football under Massimiliano Allegri. The season started brightly with dominant 3-0 wins over Como and Verona, sparking optimism that Juventus could challenge Inter for the Serie A title.

But the revolution never materialized. Juve’s performances lacked inspiration, and their biggest summer signings failed to justify their hefty price tags. Their campaign soon descended into disappointment, with an early Champions League exit, an embarrassing Coppa Italia loss to minnows Empoli, and crushing defeats to Atalanta (4-0) and Fiorentina (3-0). Even if Motta had survived until the end of the season, his position had become untenable.

Motta leaves with Juventus sitting just outside the top four, trailing his former club Bologna, now managed by Vincenzo Italiano. The club’s decision to sack him has also angered fans, especially given sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli’s statement—just a week before the dismissal—that Motta was part of a "long-term project."

Juve have turned to Igor Tudor, a former player and experienced but nomadic coach, to lead them through the remainder of the season. Tudor, who has been without a job since a brief stint as Lazio’s interim manager, is a surprising choice. However, Juventus’ options were limited, as their preferred long-term candidates—Antonio Conte, Gian Piero Gasperini, and Roberto Mancini—were unavailable or unwilling to accept a short-term role.

Tudor will take charge of his first training session on Tuesday ahead of Juve’s crucial match against Genoa on Saturday. However, he is unlikely to remain beyond the season, as the club views him as a stopgap measure. For Tudor, this is also an opportunity to prove himself and put his name back in the conversation for future managerial roles.

Looking ahead, Juventus hope to secure one of their top targets—most notably Conte—to lead a new rebuild and restore their dominance in Italian football. The coming weeks will determine whether this gamble pays off or if Juve will face yet another summer of turmoil and uncertainty.
