Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A Plus, the Member of Parliament-elect for Gomoa Central, has hinted at leaning towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he navigates his next political move in the Ninth Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

In a Facebook post on January 6, 2025, A Plus disclosed that Kennedy Agyapong, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Assin Central, had approached him with an offer to align with the NPP. This outreach comes after A Plus's successful campaign as an independent candidate in Gomoa Central, where he defeated NPP’s Eyiah Naana and NDC’s Yawson Muhammed Naeem-Deen with a significant margin.

The 2024 parliamentary results revealed A Plus secured 14,277 votes, outpacing Eyiah Naana's 11,637 and Naeem-Deen’s 10,112 votes. His victory has positioned him as a crucial figure in a Parliament where the NDC commands 183 seats compared to the NPP’s 88, granting the NDC a near two-thirds majority.

A Plus revealed that the NPP’s proposal includes enticing promises, such as refraining from contesting the Gomoa Central seat in the 2028 elections, a gesture intended to solidify his allegiance. Meanwhile, the NDC has also extended an invitation for a meeting on January 7, 2025, at 8 a.m., signaling their interest in bringing him into their fold.

“Both parties have been persuasive, and I have friends on both sides,” A Plus wrote. “However, I must disappoint some people tomorrow. Let me make this simple and clear: deep down, my heart leans toward the NDC, but my decision will ultimately rest on who prioritizes my interests and offers the best for me and the people of Gomoa Central.”

His candid acknowledgment of weighing offers from both major parties underscores the pivotal role he could play in the coming Parliament. As an independent MP, his alignment will likely influence key legislative decisions and political dynamics, especially with the NDC holding a commanding majority.

This political crossroads highlights the broader significance of collaboration and negotiation in shaping Ghana’s parliamentary landscape. A Plus’s openness to aligning with the party that best serves his constituents reflects a pragmatic approach to governance.

The Gomoa Central MP-elect’s decision will be closely monitored, as it has the potential to set the tone for alliances and rivalries in the Ninth Parliament. His independence has already added a layer of intrigue to Ghana’s political scene, emphasizing the growing impact of independent candidates in the country’s evolving democracy.

As the January 7 meeting with the NDC approaches, Ghanaians await A Plus’s next move, which could redefine the balance of power in Parliament and his role in advocating for the interests of Gomoa Central.
