Forget About Ato Forson's PHD, You Can't Compare Him To Ken Ofori-Att-NPP Spokesperson Says

A lively debate has emerged over the performance of Ghana's former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the newly appointed Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, following remarks by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) spokesperson. This discussion has gained significant public attention, with contrasting opinions on both ministers’ capabilities and legacies.

Speaking during a political forum, the NPP spokesperson passionately defended Ken Ofori-Atta's tenure as Finance Minister under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, asserting that his achievements far exceed those of Ato Forson. The spokesperson questioned Ato Forson’s qualifications, drawing attention to his professional background and casting doubts on the value of his academic achievements.

“What has Ato Forson really achieved? Before becoming an MP, he was just a bank teller. You can’t compare his experience to Ken Ofori-Atta’s. Forget about Ato Forson’s PhD; those in academia know how some degrees are obtained. What matters are results, and I believe Ato Forson will struggle as Finance Minister,” the spokesperson argued.

These remarks have sparked widespread reactions among Ghanaians. Supporters of Ken Ofori-Atta highlighted his contributions, such as stabilizing the economy through programs like Ghana CARES and boosting tourism revenue with initiatives like the Year of Return. However, critics were quick to point out the controversies that marked his tenure. They cited the country's escalating debt crisis, the unpopular E-Levy tax policy, and allegations of financial misconduct linked to Data Bank, a company associated with Ofori-Atta.

On social media, responses to the spokesperson's comments were divided. Some defended Ato Forson, arguing that he deserves the opportunity to prove his competence. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. Dr. Ato Forson has a strong academic background and relevant experience,” one user stated.

Others dismissed the spokesperson’s defense of Ken Ofori-Atta, citing the backlash he faced during his tenure. “Is this the same Ken Ofori-Atta who faced calls for resignation from even NPP MPs due to poor performance? The same person accused of using Data Bank to divert public funds?” one critic countered.

While the debate rages on, many have called for patience and a focus on the future. “It’s too early to judge Ato Forson. Let’s give him a chance to deliver and address the economic challenges we face as a nation,” another social media user concluded.

This conversation highlights the deep political divides in Ghana and the high expectations placed on leaders to steer the economy in challenging times.
