The Presidential entrance of the Accra Sports Stadium, once a symbol of prestige, has now turned into an eyesore as it becomes a dumping ground. With just seven weeks remaining until Ghana’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad, the stadium’s state has raised serious concerns. While the pitch itself is match-ready, the surroundings tell a different story. Faulty machines, broken chairs, tables, and discarded items clutter the entrance pathway, leaving a poor impression for officials and spectators alike. Additionally, vital facilities like the water supply system and the electricity room are in deplorable condition, with exposed wires, holes, and inadequate lighting posing significant risks.
Other parts of the stadium also highlight the neglect. The area near the scoreboard is riddled with filth and rat-infested holes, while cracks in the structure threaten its stability. The washrooms, emitting an unbearable stench, and several offices, including the Head of the Technical Department’s, are in a state of disrepair. These offices have broken tiles, damaged ceilings, and disconnected electricity, reflecting years of neglect despite the stadium’s massive GH¢12.5 million renovation for the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. These issues not only tarnish the reputation of the stadium, nicknamed the "nation’s Wembley," but also hinder its ability to host international games.
The Ghana Project Monitoring Group (GPMG) has taken the initiative to bring these problems to light and push for government intervention. According to Ernest Banama, a member of GPMG, the organization is determined to address the stadium’s deteriorating condition by raising awareness and initiating clean-up efforts. Banama emphasized that while GPMG is actively working to improve the situation, government support is crucial for sustainable change. As the stadium stands as a beacon of Ghanaian sports, ensuring its readiness and safety is paramount to hosting successful international matches. With time running out, the pressure is on for authorities to act swiftly and restore the Accra Sports Stadium to its former glory.
