Parliament Approves Mahama’s Ministerial Nominees Amid Minority Opposition
Ghana’s Parliament has confirmed the fourth batch of President John Mahama’s ministerial nominees following their vetting by the Appointments Committee. This approval came after the committee recommended their appointments to the House for consideration. The confirmed nominees include Dr. Rashid Pelpuo as Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed as Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology; Samuel Nartey George as Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations; Kofi Adams as Minister for Sports and Recreation; and Joseph Bukari Nikpe as Minister for Transport. The debate surrounding their approval took place on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, with Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako presiding over the parliamentary session.
While four nominees were approved without significant resistance, the Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, strongly opposed the appointment of Samuel Nartey George as the Communications Minister-designate. Their objection was rooted in concerns over Mr. George’s past public comments, where he had openly criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The Minority argued that such remarks raised questions about his suitability for the sensitive role of overseeing the country’s communications and digital innovations. Despite these concerns, the Majority Caucus dismissed the objections, arguing that Mr. George’s qualifications and track record made him fit for the position. They criticized the Minority’s stance as baseless and politically motivated.
After prolonged deliberations, the Minority acknowledged the competence of the other four nominees but insisted on a secret ballot to determine Mr. George’s fate. However, amidst strong opposition from the Majority, the Minority eventually abstained from voting altogether. This left the final decision to be made solely by the Majority through a voice vote. The Second Deputy Speaker subsequently confirmed all the appointments, including Mr. George’s, with the Minority opting out of the process entirely. This development has sparked further debates about the dynamics within Parliament and the increasing polarization between the Majority and Minority factions over key governmental appointments.
