National Daily Minimum Wage Increased to GHS19.97 Effective March 2025

The Government of Ghana has announced an increase in the National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) by 10 percent, bringing the new wage to GHS19.97. This new rate will officially take effect from March 1, 2025, and will apply to all workers in the country.

The decision was reached following negotiations by the National Tripartite Committee (NTC), which is composed of representatives from the Government, Employers, and Organized Labour. A communique issued at the end of their deliberations confirmed the new wage increment and was signed by key stakeholders, including Dr Abdul-Rashed Hassan Pelpuo, the Minister of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, who signed on behalf of the Government. Dr Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee, President of the Ghana Employers Association (GEA), signed on behalf of employers, while Mr Joshua Ansah, Secretary-General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), represented Organized Labour.

The 10 percent increment comes as part of efforts to improve the living standards of workers, particularly those in low-income employment. The National Tripartite Committee considered several factors in determining the new wage, including inflation, the cost of living, economic growth, and productivity levels.

This increase aims to enhance the purchasing power of workers and provide some relief amidst rising inflation and economic challenges. The increment is also expected to help boost worker morale and contribute to overall economic growth, as increased wages may lead to higher consumption and spending in the economy.

Employers across various sectors have been urged to comply with the new wage structure. The Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment has emphasized that the law mandates all employers to adhere to the minimum wage, and any violations could result in legal action. The Ghana Employers Association (GEA) has also assured its members of the need to abide by the decision while ensuring that businesses remain sustainable.

Labour unions have welcomed the increment but have called for continuous dialogue to ensure that future wage adjustments reflect the real economic conditions faced by workers. Organized Labour has stressed that while the increase is a step in the right direction, it still falls short of addressing the full impact of inflation on workers incomes.

The NTC has urged all parties government agencies, businesses, and employees to cooperate in implementing the new wage effectively. Moving forward, discussions on future adjustments will consider economic trends and labour market dynamics to ensure fair compensation for all workers.
