Kenyan politicians have long been known to amass significant wealth, with land ownership being one of their most notable assets. Over the years, political influence has enabled many leaders to acquire vast tracts of land, securing their financial status and control over substantial resources. A report by the Kenya Land Alliance highlights that while only 20% of Kenya’s land is arable, a remarkable 65% of this land is controlled by the wealthiest individuals in the country, including powerful politicians.

One of the most prominent landowners in Kenya is the Kenyatta family. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, a member of this influential family, ranks as one of the wealthiest individuals in the country. The Kenyatta family's wealth spans several sectors, including agriculture, media, real estate, banking, and hospitality. They are also one of the largest landowners in Kenya, with an estimated 500,000 acres of land. Much of this land was inherited from Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta, who passed away in 1978. The family's vast landholdings have made them key players in Kenya’s political and economic landscape for decades.

Another notable figure in the realm of land ownership is current President William Ruto. Over the years, Ruto has accumulated considerable wealth, positioning himself as one of the wealthiest figures in Kenya. Among his substantial landholdings is the 2,536-acre Mata farm in Taita Taveta, which is used for maize cultivation and cattle rearing. This farm borders the Criticos Ranch and Lake Jipe. Additionally, Ruto owns 1,000 acres in Narok County, neighboring properties owned by former President Kenyatta and Narok Governor Samuel Tunai. His land holdings, much like those of other politicians, have garnered significant attention and raised questions about the influence of political power in land acquisition.

The Moi family, led by the late President Daniel Arap Moi, is also among Kenya's largest landowners. The family's properties include 20,000 acres in Bahati, 20,000 acres in Olenguruoni, and 20,000 acres in Molo. They also own 1,600 acres at Kabarak and an extensive 50,000 acres at Ol Pajeta Farm. These vast landholdings further solidified the Moi family's economic and political dominance in Kenya, with land ownership being a central part of their legacy.

Former Taveta Member of Parliament Basil Criticos is another significant landowner in Kenya. His ranch in Taita Taveta spans a massive 74,000 acres. Despite facing legal challenges related to bank loans and land disputes, Criticos remains one of the country’s largest landholders, demonstrating the persistent influence of land ownership in the country’s political elite.

The late President Mwai Kibaki, too, was a major landowner. His family’s holdings include 1,200 acres at Gingalily Farm in Nakuru, 10,000 acres in Igwamiti, and another 10,000 acres in Rumuruti. The Kibaki family also owns 1,600 acres at Ruare Ranch and 20,000 acres in Nanyuki, further cementing their position among Kenya’s wealthiest landowners.

Land ownership has been a key asset for Kenya’s political elite. Politicians, including former presidents and influential families, have used their political positions to secure large tracts of land, contributing to their substantial wealth and influence. The concentration of land in the hands of a few individuals raises critical questions about wealth distribution and the role of politics in land acquis in Kenya.
