At halftime in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are locked at 1-1. Rodrygo opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 4th minute, but Julián Álvarez equalized in the 32nd minute.

While Atlético managed to recover from an early setback, they made several key mistakes in the first half that prevented them from taking control of the game.

1. Slow Start and Early Defensive Lapse

Atlético Madrid conceded within the first four minutes, a costly mistake that forced them to play from behind. Their defense was caught off guard as Rodrygo found space and finished clinically.

Players like Clément Lenglet (2.9) and José Giménez (3.0) struggled to organize the backline early on, allowing Real Madrid to take an early advantage. A more focused and compact defensive approach from the start could have prevented the goal.

2. Lack of Offensive Threat

Despite having more possession (54%), Atlético Madrid struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities. They managed only 3 shots, with just 1 on target, which came from Julián Álvarez’s goal. Griezmann (3.7) and Samuel Lino (3.0) failed to make a significant attacking impact, and the team’s inability to consistently break through Real Madrid’s defense limited their chances. They need more creativity and sharper finishing to turn their possession into goals in the second half.

3. Midfield Struggles and Poor Transitions

While Atlético maintained better possession, their midfield lacked creativity and control. Players like Rodrigo De Paul (3.5) and Pablo Barrios (3.0) struggled to progress the ball effectively.

Their passing accuracy (89%) was decent, but they failed to create any big chances. Additionally, slow transitions from defense to attack allowed Real Madrid to reset defensively, limiting Atlético’s ability to capitalize on possession.

What Needs to Change in the Second Half?

Atlético Madrid needs to tighten their defense, particularly in the early stages of the second half, to avoid another quick goal. They must also find a way to create more attacking opportunities and improve their midfield link-up play. If they can correct these mistakes, they have a chance to take control of the match and head into the second leg with an advantage.
