Customs officials in the Northern Region have intercepted a significant consignment of illicit goods, including smuggled cigarettes and restricted pharmaceutical drugs, during a targeted operation. The operation, carried out by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on February 11, 2025, took place along the Nanton-Gushegu road. Authorities seized 450 boxes of Business Royal Cigarettes and five boxes of Tapentadol tablets, with an estimated duty value of GH¢20.6 million. Acting on intelligence about a vehicle transporting contraband, customs officers set up a checkpoint on the Gaha-Gushegu road. However, the driver of the vehicle, registered as GS 7592-13, refused to stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit. When the vehicle was eventually intercepted, the driver declined to disclose details about the cargo, stating that only the owner could provide information. Shortly afterward, an individual claiming ownership arrived on a motorbike but also refused to comment on the contents of the shipment.

Following the interception, the vehicle was transported to the Tamale Collection Regional Headquarters for further inspection. Authorities summoned both the driver and the supposed owner for an official examination of the cargo the following day, but neither individual showed up. A thorough search conducted on February 19, 2025, confirmed that the vehicle was carrying highly restricted items that required proper import permits. As the individuals involved failed to provide valid documentation, customs officials formally seized the goods under Notice of Seizure Number 248806 on February 25, 2025. The Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier General Zibrim Bawah Ayorrogo, later visited the Tamale Collection Regional Headquarters to assess the situation. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between agencies in combating smuggling, noting that efforts to curb illegal trade continue despite many operations going unnoticed. He highlighted ongoing partnerships with the National Security, the Narcotics Control Commission, and other agencies to strengthen enforcement against illicit goods.

Despite increased efforts to combat smuggling, Ghana continues to face challenges related to the infiltration of illicit substances and contraband products into local markets. The rise in smuggling activities has raised concerns about growing substance abuse, particularly among young people. In response, customs officials have pledged to enhance surveillance at ports and border crossings to disrupt smuggling networks and prevent the entry of illegal goods into the country. They have also called for stricter penalties to deter offenders and reinforce the fight against illicit trade. The seized items have since been handed over to the Narcotics Control Commission for further investigation, with legal action expected against those implicated in the illegal operation. Authorities remain committed to strengthening measures to protect public health and security by curbing the circulation of illegal products in Ghana.
