KNUST Community Mourns Loss of Two Students in Tragic Incidents

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been struck by tragedy following the unfortunate passing of two students in separate incidents. The entire university community is in mourning as news of their deaths spreads, leaving staff, students, and faculty in deep sorrow.

The deceased students have been identified as Akosuah Owusuaa, a third-year Forest Resource Technology student, and Bertha Kookale Hammond, a final-year English student. Both students tragically passed away on Sunday, March 9, under unclear circumstances. Their untimely deaths have sent shockwaves through the university, with tributes pouring in from friends, lecturers, and fellow students who remember them as hardworking and dedicated individuals.

Reports indicate that Akosuah Owusuaa had been feeling unwell since Wednesday. Concerned about her health, she was sent home on Saturday in hopes of receiving proper care. Unfortunately, she passed away the following day, leaving her family, classmates, and lecturers in grief. Her sudden demise has raised concerns among students, with many seeking answers about what might have caused her death.

Meanwhile, the Department of English has expressed profound sadness over the loss of Bertha Kookale Hammond. Bertha was well known for her dedication to her studies and her remarkable creativity. According to faculty members, she was an outstanding student whose passion for literature and the arts inspired many around her. Her absence will undoubtedly leave a void in the department, and those who knew her will cherish her memory for years to come.

The student body has been deeply affected by these tragic losses, with many taking to social media to share their condolences and pay tribute to the departed students. As a way of honoring Bertha’s memory, students of the English Department (ASEK) have been encouraged to wear black on Monday, March 10, and Wednesday, March 12, 2025. This act of unity and remembrance serves as a way for her peers to express their sorrow and support her grieving family and friends.

The university administration has also extended its sympathies to the families of the deceased students. In an official statement, KNUST leadership acknowledged the pain and grief the institution is facing, assuring students and staff that support services are available for anyone struggling to cope with the loss. Counseling services have been made accessible to students who need emotional support during this difficult time.

These unfortunate events have once again highlighted the importance of student well-being on campus. Many are calling for increased attention to health support and mental wellness programs to ensure students have the resources they need when facing personal difficulties. Conversations about access to medical care, stress management, and student safety have intensified, with students urging authorities to take proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements and memorial services for both students will be shared in due course. In the meantime, the KNUST community remains united in grief, offering their thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones of Akosuah Owusuaa and Bertha Kookale Hammond.

As the university comes to terms with these heartbreaking losses, students and staff are encouraged to lean on one another for support. The legacy of Akosuah and Bertha will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew them, and they will be remembered for their contributions to their respective fields of study and the university community at large.
