The Accra Sports Stadium is set to undergo another phase of renovations following Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad. The stadium, which had previously been closed for several months after hosting the Black Stars' last 2025 AFCON qualifying match against Niger, will be refurbished to meet international standards. Speaking on TV3’s Sports Station on Monday, March 17, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, highlighted the urgent need for these renovations. He acknowledged that although some improvements have already been made—such as upgrading the pitch, dressing rooms, sanitary facilities, and air-conditioning—there is still much work to be done. The minister emphasized that the stadium has deteriorated over the years and requires comprehensive repairs to ensure it is fully restored and fit to host top-level matches.

Adams further elaborated that the playing surface has been improved, and the team’s coach is satisfied with the current state of the pitch. However, beyond the field, additional improvements are necessary to enhance the overall match-day experience for both players and spectators. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing the stadium up to standard, noting that infrastructure maintenance is critical for the growth of Ghanaian football. With the Black Stars set to face Chad on Friday, March 21, at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco for their final qualification match against Madagascar, the government and sports authorities aim to use this period as an opportunity to implement the necessary refurbishments. The planned renovations reflect Ghana’s broader ambition to maintain a world-class sporting facility that meets FIFA and CAF requirements for international competitions.

Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming matches are in full swing, with the Black Stars already beginning training ahead of the Chad encounter. The team held its first session on Monday, March 17, with nine players reporting to camp. As Ghana pushes for World Cup qualification, securing a win against Chad is seen as a crucial step toward achieving that goal. With the upcoming renovations, the stadium is expected to be temporarily closed after the match to allow construction work to proceed smoothly. This move is part of a long-term vision to modernize Ghana’s sports infrastructure and create a more professional environment for both national and international competitions. The planned refurbishment is also expected to benefit local clubs and other sporting events, ensuring that the stadium remains a premier venue for years to come.
