Black Stars Must Avoid Complacency in World Cup Qualifiers – Augustine Arhinful

Former Ghanaian striker Augustine Arhinful has cautioned the Black Stars against underestimating their opponents in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Ghana’s senior national team is regrouping for the first time this year as they prepare to face Chad and Madagascar. Their first match will be a home fixture against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by an away game against Madagascar at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium in Morocco on March 24. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Arhinful stressed that no opponent should be taken lightly, as all teams continue to improve their performances. He pointed out that Ghana has struggled with overconfidence in the past, often assuming superiority without backing it up on the field. The former striker advised that while a dominant win against Chad would be welcome, the team must stay focused and respect every opponent to avoid unexpected setbacks.

Ghana’s national team is eager to bounce back after a disappointing 2024, during which they won only two of their ten matches. Their recent struggles have raised concerns among fans and football analysts, making the upcoming qualifiers even more crucial. The Black Stars have a rich history in World Cup tournaments, having participated in four editions—2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. However, recent performances suggest that they need to rebuild their strength and consistency if they hope to qualify for the 2026 edition in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Many believe that Ghana’s tendency to underestimate smaller teams has contributed to their inconsistent results. Arhinful’s warning serves as a reminder that past glory does not guarantee success, and the team must approach each match with determination and discipline.

Several football stakeholders, including former captain Asamoah Gyan, have urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team as they embark on this crucial phase of their qualification journey. Head coach Otto Addo has expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to turn things around, provided they maintain focus and execute their strategies effectively. The Black Stars' fate in the qualifiers will largely depend on how well they handle their next two matches. A strong performance against Chad and Madagascar could restore confidence in the team and strengthen their standing in the group. However, a poor showing could further complicate their path to qualification. With high expectations from fans and pressure mounting, the team must heed Arhinful’s advice and approach every game with the seriousness it deserves.
