Hanks Anuku Speaks on Career Struggles, Blackmail, and Nollywood’s Challenges

Veteran Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has shared his painful experiences in the Nigerian movie industry, revealing how jealousy and blackmail derailed his career. In a recent interview on the Nollywood Hardcore podcast with Emma Labista, Anuku explained that some colleagues, envious of his success, went to extreme lengths to damage his reputation. According to him, these individuals manipulated images taken from movie sets and spread misleading narratives about his mental health. As these rumors circulated, they significantly impacted his career, leading to a drastic decline in job opportunities. Anuku lamented that this period was one of the darkest in his life, as the false claims made it difficult for him to secure acting roles. The weight of these struggles became unbearable, leaving him with no choice but to step back from Nollywood.

Feeling frustrated and abandoned by an industry he had dedicated years to, Anuku sought refuge in Ghana. He found new opportunities in the country’s creative arts sector during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, having previously supported the president’s campaign. His move to Ghana provided him with a fresh start, allowing him to work without the constant battle against industry politics and personal attacks. However, despite this new chapter in his life, Anuku did not hold back in criticizing the Nigerian film industry. He expressed disappointment over the lack of growth and innovation among actors and filmmakers, arguing that many in Nollywood refuse to evolve and embrace versatility. He labeled them as hypocrites, accusing them of stifling creativity and limiting the industry’s potential for progress. He believes that Nollywood could achieve greater heights if practitioners were more open to learning and adapting to new trends.

Despite the setbacks and betrayals he has faced, Anuku remains an icon in the Nigerian film industry, with fans still appreciating his contributions to Nollywood. His story has sparked discussions about the challenges actors encounter, including rivalry, blackmail, and the difficulties of sustaining a successful career. Many have sympathized with him, acknowledging the dark side of the entertainment industry, where envy and competition can sometimes take a toxic turn. While Anuku continues to find ways to rebuild his career, his experiences serve as a lesson to upcoming actors about the realities of fame and the importance of resilience. He remains hopeful for the future, determined to keep pushing forward and inspiring others with his story.
