Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has reaffirmed the Black Stars' determination to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing the team’s commitment to returning to football’s grandest stage after a disappointing group stage exit in Qatar 2022.
The Arsenal star, who has been a key figure in Ghana’s midfield over the past decade, said in a recent interview that the team is united in its goal of securing a spot at the next World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“We want to be at the 2026 World Cup. It’s a big target for us, and we are working hard to make it happen,” Partey said. “The last tournament didn’t go the way we wanted, but we’ve learned from it. Now we have a fresh opportunity to show that Ghana belongs on the world stage.”
Partey acknowledged the increased competition in African qualifiers, especially with only nine direct slots available for the continent, but believes Ghana has the talent and experience to navigate the road to qualification.
“We know it won’t be easy,” he added. “Every team wants to go to the World Cup, but we have the players, the belief, and the support of the nation. With good preparation and unity, we can do it.”
Ghana began its qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup in promising fashion and sits in a competitive group that includes Mali, Madagascar, and the Central African Republic. The top team from each group automatically qualifies for the tournament.
Partey, who has battled injuries over the past season, is expected to play a crucial leadership role both on and off the pitch as Ghana continues its campaign. His experience and composure in midfield remain vital to the Black Stars’ ambitions.
As the team looks ahead to the next round of qualifiers, Partey’s message is clear: “We’re focused, and we know what it means to our people. Ghana must be in North America in 2026.”
