The Central Regional Police Command has taken two individuals into custody for allegedly transporting stolen electricity cables suspected to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In an announcement shared via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the police identified the suspects as Mohammed Sulemana and Iddrisu Basit. Both individuals work as drivers’ mates on an articulated truck. Their arrest took place on April 1, 2025, at Gomoa Awombrew in the Central Region.
Authorities discovered the truck, which bears the registration number GC 7410-11, loaded with 28 rims of ECG cables. It was found stationed at Gomoa Awombrew under suspicious circumstances. Upon further inquiry, ECG officials were called to the scene to verify the items. Led by the company’s Operations Officer, Mr. David Ackom, ECG representatives confirmed that the cables indeed belonged to the company. However, they pointed out that no authorized delivery of such materials was expected in the area.
The truck driver, identified as Zibo Imoro, was not present at the time of the arrest and has since gone into hiding. Police have launched an active search operation to locate and apprehend him. Law enforcement authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to bring him to justice.
Meanwhile, the truck has been placed under police surveillance as investigations proceed. Authorities are working closely with ECG officials to determine how the cables were obtained and whether additional individuals are involved in the suspected theft.
The arrest has raised concerns over the security of ECG’s assets and the broader issue of cable theft in the region. Stolen electricity cables have been a persistent problem, often leading to power outages and significant financial losses for the company. ECG and law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to curbing such activities and ensuring that those responsible face legal consequences.
Community members and stakeholders have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving public infrastructure to the authorities. The police have assured the public that they will provide updates on the case as new developments arise.
As the investigation unfolds, the police are expected to interrogate the two arrested suspects to gather more information regarding the source of the cables and any potential accomplices. ECG officials are also reviewing their internal monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This incident underscores the need for stringent security measures around the transportation and handling of electricity cables. It also highlights the importance of cooperation between security agencies and utility companies in combating theft and protecting public resources.
For now, the case remains under active investigation, with authorities determined to uncover the full details behind the unauthorized transportation of ECG’s cables and ensure that all involved parties are held accountable.
