During Tottenham's 1-0 loss to Chelsea, Ange Postecoglou denied that he was trying to provoke Tottenham fans with an ear-cupping celebration. In the matchup that took place on Thursday at Stamford Bridge, only Enzo Fernandez's goal in the second half separated the Spurs and Blues. However, the visitors thought they had equalized when Pape Matar Sarr scored from 25 yards out, but a lengthy VAR review determined that it was due to a buildup foul on Moises Caicedo.

Sarr was brought on as a substitute by Postecoglou a few minutes prior to his disallowed goal, but this decision was met with bewilderment by the travelling Tottenham fans, who chanted 'you don't know what you're doing' at the head coach for hooking Lucas Bergvall, who was one of their brightest players to that point. Postecoglou cradled his ears in front of the ecstatic fans after Sarr appeared to have scored, but he claims this action was misinterpreted. In his post-game press conference, Postecoglou said, "Jheeze mate, it's incredible how things get interpreted." I just wanted to hear them cheer after we scored. It wasn't the first time my substitution was booed; I wanted to win the game with momentum. Postecoglou responded, "I am at some disconnect with the world these days - I don't know," when asked if he was right to make the gesture. Perhaps you are correct." "If the fans feel I'm not doing a good job, they're allowed to express those feelings," he continued later. On Sunday, Postecoglou's Tottenham face Southampton at home, who could be relegated from the Premier League if they lose. Spurs fans are planning a protest against the club's ownership prior to the game.

It doesn’t bother me, it’s not the first time they [the fans] have booed my substitutions or my decisions, that’s fine. They are permitted to do that, but given that we had just scored a goal and an equalizer, I hoped we could generate some excitement. “I just felt there was a little bit of a momentum shift there, so if people want to read into it that I’m trying to make a point about something, like I said, we’d been through a tough time. I thought we had the momentum to win against Chelsea if they got really far behind the young men. For Postecoglou, Thursday night's loss also provided the Australian with an unwanted record - he is the first ever Spurs head coach to lose each of his first four league matches against Chelsea while in charge of the club.

Ever the pragmatist, he was honest in his assessment after watching Spurs fail to score for a third time in four Premier League matches.

He continued, "It's a difficult night, a close game, and not an easy place to come." "We had to put in a lot of effort to stay in the game; we conceded a disappointing goal and battled our way back into it, but we didn't get anything out of it. Postecoglou responded, "Jesus mate, it's incredible how things get interpreted," when asked about the incident once more in the post-match press conference. I just wanted to hear their cheers because we had just scored. The Spurs manager responded, "I am at some disconnect with the world these days - I don't know," when asked if it was a mistake to do so. Perhaps you are correct."
