GACL Denies Drug Trafficking Allegations Involving AirMed and Antonov Aircraft

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has strongly denied allegations linking two aircraft that landed at the Kotoka International Airport in March 2025 to drug trafficking activities. In a press release issued on Monday, April 8, GACL emphasized that thorough investigations conducted by Aviation Security and National Security found no traces of illegal substances on either of the planes.

The allegations were initially raised by Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee. He alleged that the two aircraft—AirMed flight N823AM and a Cavok Air Antonov An-12B cargo plane—were used to transport cocaine and large sums of money to Gran Canaria, Spain.

Responding to these claims, GACL clarified that it does not issue landing permits for incoming aircraft. Rather, this responsibility lies with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in coordination with National Security. The company added that all ground handling services for the flights in question were carried out by Swissport, not GACL.

GACL further distanced itself from any alleged association between its Managing Director, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, and Rev. Fordjour. According to the company, Opare has never met, spoken to, or had any form of relationship with the Member of Parliament. They rejected any insinuations implying otherwise as baseless and misleading.

“The burden of proof lies on those making these serious allegations to present credible evidence,” the statement read. GACL also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and stated it would take legal action against any individual, media house, or organization that intentionally disseminates falsehoods or defamatory content regarding the matter.

The company called on the public to disregard the allegations and treat them with the contempt they deserve. GACL reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of aviation security and regulatory compliance and reassured the public of its integrity in all airport operations.
