Seven individuals have been arraigned before the Wa District Court after their arrest for illegal mining activities along the Black Volta River in the Wa West District. The arrests followed a successful operation by the Upper West Regional Police Command on Thursday, April 10, 2025, targeting the Chiantanga community near Dorimon.

The operation, led by local authorities, resulted in the apprehension of the suspects, five males and two females. The individuals arrested are Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu. They have been taken into police custody, where they are currently assisting with ongoing investigations into the illegal mining operations that have been damaging the local environment.

In addition to the arrests, the police confiscated a significant number of items used in the mining activities, including ten Changfang mining machines, two unregistered tricycles, and various motorbikes. Six student mattresses, believed to be used by the miners at the site, were also seized. The authorities have confirmed that the suspects will be prosecuted once investigations are complete, by the law.

The operation is part of a renewed effort to combat illegal mining, also known as "galamsey," in the region, particularly near-critical water bodies like the Black Volta. Illegal mining has been linked to significant environmental degradation, including the pollution of rivers, the destruction of forests, and the creation of unsafe living conditions for nearby communities.

Residents along the Black Volta have voiced concerns about the adverse effects of illegal mining, which has caused widespread water pollution and encroachment on their lands. Additionally, the illegal activities have contributed to rising insecurity in the area, as well as environmental destruction. The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of local communities.

The actions taken by the Upper West Regional Police Command serve as part of a broader effort by the government to tackle illegal mining and safeguard the country's natural resources. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preserving the environment and holding those responsible for illegal mining accountable for their actions.
