The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of illicit drugs valued at N2.6 billion during a major operation in Jigawa State. The agency disclosed this development on Monday, noting that the bust was part of its intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking across Nigeria.

According to NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the arrests followed a well-coordinated intelligence led operation targeting major drug suppliers operating in the region. The suspects, whose identities were withheld pending further investigation, were apprehended in separate locations across the state.

The operation, which took several days to execute, resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of narcotics, including cannabis, opioids, and methamphetamine. Preliminary assessments put the street value of the recovered drugs at over N2.6 billion.

“The agency remains committed to ridding every part of Nigeria of illicit drugs and dismantling criminal networks that threaten public health and safety,” Babafemi said in a statement. “Our operatives in Jigawa displayed exceptional bravery and professionalism in carrying out this successful operation.”

He further explained that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will soon be charged to court. Babafemi also praised the collaboration between the NDLEA and other security agencies, which he said has been critical in tracking and apprehending drug traffickers.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on drug related crimes. He urged communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could lead to further arrests.

“The success in Jigawa is another clear message to drug traffickers: there is no hiding place. The agency will continue to pursue them relentlessly,” Marwa stated.

Residents of Jigawa have since lauded the NDLEA for its swift action, expressing hope that continued efforts will significantly reduce the availability of hard drugs in their communities.

As the agency intensifies its nationwide crackdown, observers believe that sustained operations like this will go a long way in dismantling drug syndicates and improving national security.
