All About the Solar System and Venus


Hi, it's me again, here to tell you a little bit about the solar system! Of course, you know that the solar system consists of the Sun, nine planets, and their moons, along with smaller celestial bodies like asteroids and comets. These planets revolve around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, each with unique features that make them distinct from one another. Naming the nine planets might seem like basic knowledge (probably from primary school), but in case you're not familiar with the names, here they are with quick facts about each:


1. Mercury 

Rotation(Day length) ~59 earth days

Revolution (Year Length): ~88 Earth days

2. Venus


Rotation: ~243 Earth days (spins backwards)

Revolution: ~225 Earth days

3. Earth


Rotation: ~24 hours

Revolution: ~365.25 days

4. Mars


Rotation: ~24.6 hours

Revolution: ~687 Earth days

5. Jupiter

Rotation: ~9.9 hours

Revolution: ~11.86 Earth years

6. Saturn


Rotation: ~10.7 hours

Revolution: ~29.5 Earth years


7. Uranus


Rotation: ~17.2 hours (rotates on its side)


Revolution: ~84 Earth years


8. Neptune


Rotation: ~16 hours

Revolution: ~165 Earth years


9. Pluto (Dwarf Planet)

Rotation: ~6.4 Earth days

Revolution: ~248 Earth years


Now, let’s focus on Venus! There are so many interesting facts about Venus. First, did you know that Venus is the hottest planet, even though Mercury is the closest to the Sun? Yes Venus's surface temperature averages around 465°C (869°F), hotter than Mercury, despite being farther from the Sun. This is because Venus has a thick atmosphere that traps heat, whereas Mercury has a very thin atmosphere, which can't retain heat.Infact Venus temperature can rise to the extent of melting lead!!


Now, here's a fun fact about Venus: one day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus! Let me explain how that works. To understand this, we need to talk about two concepts: rotation and revolution.


Rotation is when a planet spins around its own axis. This gives us a day.

Revolution is when a planet moves around the Sun. This gives us a year.

So here’s the breakdown:

In rotation, the planet stays in place while it spins around. Think of it like a person standing still while spinning in place — that’s rotation.

In revolution, the planet moves around a central point, like a person running around a chair — that’s revolution.

On Earth, one full rotation gives us a day, which is 24 hours, and one full revolution gives us a year, which is 365.25 days.

Now, to calculate a year or day on other planets, scientists compare them to Earth days. For example, Neptune takes 17 Earth hours to complete one rotation, so 17 Earth hours make one day on Neptune.


But back to Venus. Venus is quite unique in that a single Venus day (one rotation) lasts 243 Earth days, while a Venus year (one revolution) lasts 225 Earth days. So, a day on Venus is actually longer than its year!


Venus rotates backwards compared to most planets, which means it spins in the opposite direction. This is why Venus’s rotation is so slow. Some scientists believe Venus's backward rotation might be the result of a collision with a large asteroid billions of years ago, which could have slowed down its rotation. Another theory suggests that the Sun's gravity may have dragged Venus in the opposite direction.


Here’s another interesting fact: on Venus, the Sun rises twice during each Venusian day. This happens because the Sun rises every 117 Earth days, which is rougly half of a Venus day!


Venus is a strange and fascinating planet with its long days, extreme heat, and unique rotation. It’s a great reminder of how mysterious our solar system can be!
