The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed an additional GHS259.5 million to health facilities across Ghana as part of efforts to sustain the country’s healthcare delivery system. This latest release, announced on May 21, 2025, reflects the Authority's ongoing commitment to timely reimbursements, financial sustainability, and improved service delivery under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The amount—GHS259,546,601.77 to be exact—was paid to credentialed healthcare providers, including public, private, mission-based, and quasi-public institutions. According to the NHIA, the disbursement was completed within a 21-day turnaround time, highlighting growing efficiency in claims processing and payment.

A breakdown of the payment shows that public healthcare facilities received the largest share of the funds, with GHS112.6 million, representing 43% of the total amount. Private health institutions were allocated GHS104.6 million, accounting for 40%. Mission facilities, typically run by religious or faith-based organizations, received GHS40 million, which constitutes 15% of the overall disbursement. Quasi-public health institutions received the remaining GHS2.28 million, making up 1% of the total.

This latest release was approved by the NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, as part of ongoing efforts to build trust among healthcare providers and enhance the NHIS’s capacity to support universal health coverage. It brings the total amount paid to healthcare providers in 2025 so far to over GHS1.1 billion—specifically GHS1,103,028,808.59.

The NHIA emphasized that these payments are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the financial health of Ghana's healthcare delivery system. In a statement issued by the Authority's Corporate Affairs Directorate, the NHIA reaffirmed its focus on improving operational efficiency, reinforcing strong partnerships with healthcare providers, and maintaining transparency in all its financial transactions.

The timely release of funds comes at a crucial moment when healthcare providers require consistent and reliable funding to ensure uninterrupted services, particularly as Ghana strives toward universal health coverage. The NHIA also acknowledged the support of its stakeholders, including healthcare institutions and policy partners, whose collaboration continues to enable the Authority to meet its goals.

As the NHIS continues to evolve, initiatives like this are vital to ensuring that both providers and patients can depend on a stable and responsive health financing system. The NHIA assured the public of its continued dedication to accountability, improved service delivery, and the long-term sustainability of health insurance in Ghana.
