Bayer Leverkusen wants to appoint Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, with current manager Xabi Alonso reportedly heading to Real Madrid. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag has already agreed to a two-year contract with Leverkusen, despite being one of the top candidates to return to his former club Ajax to replace Francesco Farioli.
Leverkusen also had Como manager Cesc Fabregas on their radar, but the Spaniard is happy to remain with the Italian side, and Como are equally determined to keep him despite Leverkusen’s strong interest.
Erik ten Hag's coaching career has been filled with significant challenges, especially during his time at Manchester United, where he was sacked in 2024. Despite that, Ten Hag has achieved a lot throughout his career — notably at Go Ahead Eagles, where he secured promotion to the Eredivisie after 17 years.
His most successful coaching stint, however, came at Ajax, where he won three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cups, and guided the club to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
He was appointed as Manchester United manager in 2022 and during his time there, he won the Carabao Cup in 2023, finished third in the Premier League once (securing Champions League qualification), and also won the 2023/2024 FA Cup, which earned United a place in the Europa League.
However, after a poor run of results in the Europa League and a series of disappointing performances in the Premier League, he was eventually sacked.
Despite the sacking, many Manchester United fans still associate Ten Hag’s legacy with the club, especially due to his high-profile signings such as André Onana, Antony, and Rasmus Højlund. These signings have struggled to justify their hefty price tags, with some fans even jokingly calling for his "resack" or criticizing the club’s transfer policy under his watch.
Still, in spite of his struggles at Old Trafford, Bayer Leverkusen are prepared to hand Ten Hag the reins, hoping he can continue from where Xabi Alonso left off.
