In a surprising turn of political events, senior figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are reportedly preparing to meet with former President John Dramani Mahama to plead for clemency on behalf of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The move comes in the wake of mounting legal and political pressure facing Chairman Wontumi, whose recent actions have stirred controversy and drawn significant public criticism. Though the full details of the allegations remain undisclosed, sources close to the matter suggest they involve alleged defamatory comments and a potential breach of legal or moral conduct directed toward key figures within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
President Mahama, who is currently leading the NDC into the 2024 general elections, is seen as central to any resolution involving forgiveness or softening of stance toward Wontumi, especially if legal or political pressure stems from quarters sympathetic to him.
According to party insiders, a delegation of respected NPP elders—including former ministers and regional party stalwarts—will formally seek an audience with the former President to request his intervention and magnanimity. The elders believe such a gesture would foster political tolerance and national unity, especially during a period marked by rising tensions between the two major political parties.
“This is not just about Wontumi. It’s about the spirit of Ghanaian democracy and maturity in our political discourse,” said a senior NPP member who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We believe that President Mahama, as a statesman, can demonstrate leadership by extending a hand of reconciliation.”
While the NDC has not yet officially commented on the reported move, analysts note that such an overture from the NPP could open doors for a more civil campaign environment as the nation heads toward the polls.
Whether or not President Mahama will accept the meeting or grant any form of pardon remains to be seen. However, the proposed intervention by the NPP elders is being hailed by many as a rare and commendable attempt at bridging Ghana’s often divisive political divide.
