“Good move!” – Nana Akomea Backs NPP’s Decision to Hold Presidential Primaries in 2026

Accra, June 20, 2025 – In a vote of confidence that has already stirred conversation within party ranks, Nana Akomea—a veteran of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Communications Director—hailed the announcement by the National Council that the NPP’s presidential primaries are set for January 31, 2026. Speaking today, he described the move as exactly what the party needs to “renew energy and enthusiasm at the grassroots.”

Akomea, who once served as CEO of Ghana’s State Transport Corporation, addressed reporters in Accra this morning. He noted that setting a firm date “well ahead of the next general elections” helps avoid internal friction and gives aspirants ample time to campaign responsibly.

“This is the right signal to send—to our members, our supporters, and the nation,” he declared.

The primaries date was confirmed this week by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah  .

Reflecting on national unity, Akomea emphasized that early primaries can “forge unity by encouraging dialogue, competition, and constructive engagement—before fault lines appear.” Local media outlets quoted him stating, “If we start late, signs of division emerge; setting January 31 gives us breathing space to test our ideas and build consensus.”

His comments follow weeks of speculation. Not long ago, there was concern among some factions that a drawn-out process could deepen divides—especially after former flagbearer hopeful Ken Agyapong hosted 268 former MMDCEs to signal early intent to run  . Akomea’s endorsement today seems designed to reassure both party insiders and the Ghanaian public that the party is prepared for a clean, transparent, and orderly contest.

Political watchers say that his support carries weight. Akomea is widely viewed as a stabilizing voice within the NPP, capable of appealing across the spectrum. “This endorsement aligns with calls from other senior figures demanding clarity on timelines,” analysts note. The move also echoes a similar push from General Secretary Koduah, who said that early primaries will help “unite the party base”  .

As the primaries campaign officially opens its countdown, the question now on every NPP member’s lips is: who will step forward—and when? For now, Akomea’s backing has delivered the boost the party was looking for. With unity, timing, and transparency all on the table, the NPP’s leadership race looks set to be not just a contest of ambition but a test of cohesion—strategically scheduled to deliver results and define direction heading into 2028.
