Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a strong admonition to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging them to steer clear of appeals based on religion or ethnicity. Speaking at the Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, June 21, he described such tactics as perilous threats to party unity. He emphasized that the NPP embraces individuals from every faith and tribe, likening the party’s inclusive nature to “the elephant family.” He stressed that unity, not division, must guide their preparations for both the upcoming 2026 presidential primaries and the 2028 general elections  .

Dr Bawumia pointed out that data from both the Aaron Mike Oquaye Constitutional Committee and other analyses affirm that religion and ethnicity had no influence on his support base in the 2024 elections. He noted that his 4.7 million votes came from a diverse group of Ghanaians, not a single religious or tribal bloc. He rejected suggestions that a candidate’s faith should be a yardstick for electability, challenging those who believe otherwise. He reminded listeners that politics built on fabricated divisions misleads members and weakens collective purpose  .

“If religion was a deciding factor, I wouldn’t have contested at all—I would have stepped aside,” Dr Bawumia declared, underscoring his commitment to the broader interests of the party. He described himself as not being driven by selfish ambition, but by a deep concern for maintaining the NPP’s capacity to win in 2028. He stressed that he would not allow personal preference to undermine the party’s chances in future elections. His words reflected a prioritization of unity and national cohesion over personal success  .

These remarks come at a time when speculation around internal jockeying within the NPP is escalating ahead of the January 2026 presidential primaries. Widely regarded as a front‑runner, Dr Bawumia continues to position himself as a unifying candidate, cautioning against any attempt to fracture the party along religious or tribal lines. His message serves as a clear reminder that the NPP must resist divisive narratives and remain united in its pursuit of victory. By calling out these tactics now, he aims to reinforce a culture of inclusivity as the party moves toward its next electoral phase  .
