Gbenga Adebusoye, a medical practitioner at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, has warned that abusing paracetamol in general, and using it to tenderize meat in particular, can result in liver and renal failure.

According to him, taking too much paracetamol causes rapid liver damage, which can lead to severe liver injury and liver failure that can only be treated with a liver transplant.

Apart from its therapeutic application and the prescribed dosage, the medical expert stated that paracetamol should not be used to tenderize meat or for any other purpose, since its overuse is extremely harmful to one's health. He explained that medications should be kept in cold settings with temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius.

He said that if medications were not properly maintained and left in hot environments, the content of the pharmaceuticals would be harmed, making them less strong.

He also mentioned the likelihood of severe and harmful chemical interactions, which might change the medicine from a useful to a toxic molecule.

As a result, Dr. Adebusoye recommended individuals to refrain from abusing narcotics in general, as doing so may be fatal.

According to NAN, paracetamol tablets are being used by some food vendors and caterers in the country to tenderize tough meat.

Others even cook with tablespoons, nails, and potassium.

While some Jos food sellers denied using paracetamol to tenderize their meats, others admitted to using potassium to tenderize cowhide (Pomo) and beans.
