LUIS DIAZ is set to join Liverpool in a deal worth up to £50 million, taking one of the club's vacant shirt numbers.
Liverpool's new acquisition Luis Diaz will have several shirt numbers to choose from when he joins the Reds in the next 24 hours or so, but one number in particular appears to be the Colombian's choice.
Diaz will be Liverpool's only signing of the January transfer window, joining from Porto for a fee just shy of £50 million, plus add-ons.
The 25-year-old, who has 16 goals and six assists in 28 games for Porto this season, has undergone a medical in South America where he is on international duty with Colombia.
Diaz, who faced Jurgen Klopp's team in the Champions League group stages, was the top target this summer.
However, Tottenham's pursuit of the player, combined with Porto's reduced price tag as a result of their elimination from Europe's top competition, prompted Klopp to move quickly.
It was previously thought that Porto would demand his £67m release clause be met, so the Merseyside club are ecstatic to have snatched him for an initial £37.5m.
Diaz will be announced as Liverpool's newest signing soon and will choose a shirt number to wear for at least the second half of the season.
Because of the size of the club's squad, many of the main options are taken, but there are eight numbers that’s No 32 that may be of interest.
Diaz is unlikely to pick the available No 2 and so more realistic choices are No 16, No 19, No 23, No 24, No 25, No 29, No 30 and No 31.
The quick-footed wideman wears No 7 for Porto, but that shirt is now occupied by James Milner, who is expected to leave Anfield when his contract expires in the summer.
Diaz also wears No 14 for Colombia, but that number is owned by Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, and the No 17 he wore at under-20 level is owned by Curtis Jones.
Diaz previously played for Colombian club Junior FC in Barranquilla, where he wore the numbers 23 and 10.
With Sadio Mane also taking No. 10, No. 23 may be the obvious choice for the player at his new club. Since Xherdan Shaqiri left for Lyon in the summer, the number has been vacant, and Emre Can was the last player to wear it after Jamie Carragher.
Carragher wore it from 1995 to 2013, while another iconic figure in Liverpool history, Robbie Fowler, wore it for three seasons before him.
Diaz's impending arrival on Merseyside has sparked interest, especially given the club's chances of winning silverware in all four competitions - the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup, in which they face Chelsea on February 26.
