As cultural institutions distance themselves from prominent Russian artists, Anna Netrebko's performances will be halted.
THE METROPOLITAN OPERA declared on Sunday that it will cut relations with artists and institutions who have expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin in the wake of his approval of the invasion of Ukraine.
"As a worldwide opera company, the Met can help raise awareness about persecution and contribute to the struggle against it." While we believe strongly in the long-standing warm friendship and cultural exchange between Russian and American artists and institutions, we can no longer engage with artists or institutions who support or are supported by Putin," said Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager, in a video statement posted to the Met's website.
