The Russian Football Union has announced that it will challenge its exclusion from international competitions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Fifa and Uefa suspended Russian football clubs and national teams from all competitions "until further notice" on Monday.

The union announced that it would submit a single case against the international and European regulatory bodies of football, demanding that Russia's men's and women's national teams be permitted to compete.

Russia wants its national teams to be allowed to compete in the men's World Cup play-offs next month and the women's squad to be included in the Euro 2022 competition in England this summer.

If they don't win, the union says they'll seek for the events they were supposed to compete in to be canceled.

"If Fifa and Uefa oppose such a procedure, a demand will be made for interim measures, such as the suspension of Fifa and Uefa rulings, as well as competitions in which Russian teams were supposed to compete," Russian football authorities warned.

Spartak Moscow was also eliminated from the Europa League, while RB Leipzig, their last-16 opponents, advanced to the quarter-finals.

According to Russian football officials, "Fifa and Uefa did not have a legal foundation when deciding on the removal of Russian teams," and "believes that Fifa and Uefa did not have a legal basis when deciding on the removal of Russian teams."

"The Russian Football Union was also denied the ability to submit its opinion," the statement said, "violating the fundamental right to defense."

"In addition, Fifa and Uefa did not consider other options for action when making judgments, except for the entire removal of Russian competitors from the competition."

Fifa and Uefa intervened after Russia launched a military invasion of neighboring Ukraine last Thursday, backed by Belarus.

In order to "guarantee the likelihood of Russian teams participating in the next scheduled matches," Russia said it would "insist on an expedited procedure for reviewing the case."

On March 24, the Russian men's team was supposed to play Poland in a World Cup play-off semi-final.
