Government has no intention of "turning back" its signature Free Senior High School (SHS) program, according to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

The Minister told the press on Tuesday that the administration is dedicated to ensuring that all children of school age have access to high-quality education.

He highlighted that the program is a long-term strategy for transforming the country.

"Let me state unequivocally that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has no intention of reversing a significant policy like Free SHS.

"We consider education as the best enabler for long-term economic growth and transformation," he said, adding that "we will do more to strengthen it so that it can serve more and better our youngsters."

Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, former President John Mahama's 2020 running mate, said she is waiting with bated breath for the concept of "review" that will be applied to the government's key programs.

Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the Information Minister, indicated earlier this week that the government will examine all of its 16 major programs, including Free SHS.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, on the other hand, couldn't understand why the same individuals who said former President John Mahama meant 'cancel' when he used the word'review' now want to do the same thing they used to criticize.

"Others assumed we were going to cancel when we said'review.'" We are still awaiting the definition of review from the 'Black Dictionary,' as this is the source that they use for many of their definitions.

Mr Mahama's return, according to the President, could result in the program's discontinuation.

However, if won in the upcoming 2020 general elections, the NDC flagbearer has stated that he will reconsider the Free-SHS policy within his first 90 days in office.

The NDC's presidential candidate noted a lack of collaboration with stakeholders in determining the most effective means to carry out the program.

Conversations on Free SHS erupted earlier this week when the government launched a review of its flagship programs.

The Free Senior High School program was a key campaign promise made by then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016, and it has since become an important part of the educational system.

However, a year after its introduction, Mr Ofori-Atta stated that the strategy should have targeted people in true need rather than being designed to benefit the government.
