Not Fair To Blame President Mahama For Recent Attacks On Journalist-Ofosu Kwakye To GJA
Amid escalating violence against journalists in Ghana, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly defended former President John Dramani Mahama, arguing that holding him responsible for these attacks is both unjust and politically driven.
Addressing the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwakye Ofosu dismissed allegations that link Mahama to the incidents, stressing the need for an unbiased and comprehensive evaluation of the situation.
"It is alarming to see the growing threats against journalists," he remarked. "At the same time, it is equally concerning that some individuals are hastily blaming Mahama without any concrete proof. This oversimplifies a complex issue and diverts attention from its true causes."
He emphasized the significance of free speech and press freedom in a democracy. While recognizing the GJA’s concerns about the safety of journalists, he cautioned against politicizing the matter to unfairly target certain figures.
Kwakye Ofosu argued that making accusations against Mahama without proper evidence not only lacks fairness but also shifts focus away from addressing the root causes. He called for a thorough investigation that includes all stakeholders to uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
He also highlighted the need to examine the motivations behind these attacks and implement measures to tackle the deeper issues contributing to hostility toward journalists.
"We should not allow this situation to be manipulated for political advantage at the expense of press safety," he warned. "This is a national concern that requires collective action. Our focus should be on solutions rather than assigning blame."
Additionally, he urged the government to take concrete steps to protect journalists and create a secure environment for media professionals. He also encouraged the GJA to collaborate with other relevant organizations to investigate the incidents and provide necessary support to affected journalists.
His remarks come at a critical time in Ghana’s political sphere, as concerns over press freedom continue to mount. While the GJA has yet to officially respond, the conversation surrounding media safety and political responsibility is expected to persist.
