President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has tasked the United Arab Emirates' new president with continuing to work to improve the lives of his people.
Continue To Bring Emiratis Unity And Prosperity – Akufo-Addo To New UAE President
On May 14, 2022, Akufo-Addo sent a message to Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Twitter, emphasizing Ghana's desire to improve relations with the Gulf powerhouse.
Following the death of his brother, Khalifah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, late last week, Mohammed bin Zayed was elected new President of the UAE, which Akufo-Addo termed as "a big loss for the UAE, and indeed, for the globe."
"The people and government of Ghana, as well as myself, congratulate His Excellency Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the newly elected President of the United Arab Emirates."
"It is my earnest hope that the new President will continue to lead the UAE's people to unity, security, progress, and prosperity."
"It is also my overarching hope that the existing strong Ghana-UAE relations will continue to improve, based on a common agenda of freedom, development, progress, and prosperity," the letter to the next President said.
Sheikh Khalifa's death
President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan died on Friday, according to the UAE's national news agency WAM.
He was also the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Premier and vice-president The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, acted as president until the federal council, which comprises the rulers of the seven emirates, met and chose Mohammed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum.
Khalifa, who was born in 1948, became the ruler of the richest emirate in the world, Abu Dhabi, in 2004.
Mohammed bin Zayed has been the de facto ruler of the US-allied UAE, especially since Khalifa suffered a stroke in 2014 and has been seldom seen in public since then.
