The school's prototype solar dehydrators for fruits and vegetables helped them win the competition against six senior high schools.  They would compete in a zonal tournament for a chance to advance to the national competition.

About three years ago, the Energy Commission began a goal to promote technology, engineering, and mathematics in senior high schools.

The programme seeks to enhance senior high school research and development while also assisting students in applying what they have learned. The research for this year is focused on locating workable options for preparing and preserving food using renewable energy.

Julius Nkansah Nyarko, a senior manager at the Energy Commission and the project coordinator, outlined the goal of the competition.

"We want to move away from the chew, poor, and pass scenario, where students just study the theoretical side of a subject in the classroom, and toward a condition where they apply and put these theories into practise,". Seven schools in the Volta Region submitted prototype models for using renewable energy to process, store, and prepare food as part of the competition. Different solar cooker types were demonstrated by Mawuli School, Bishop Herman College, Anlo Senior High School, and Awudome Senior High.

The cookers were made to capture light energy and transform it into heat energy. An electric stove, blender, and oven were built by Tsito Senior High Technical School. The participants included a system for converting energy for usage at night.

The Keta Senior High School demonstrated a device that generates power from footsteps. However, it was unable to win enough points to cover the final cost.

The Kpedze Senior High School's food preservation system, which uses sun dehydrators to prepare fruits and vegetables, was chosen as the winning entry.

The degree of knowledge displayed by the competing schools impressed Mr. Nyarko.

"I think they all performed admirably. You can see how fiercely contested this challenge has been by the point discrepancy between the second and first school, which was, I believe, roughly 0.3. After it has been fully developed, this product will be offered on the market, and profits will be produced from it, he said.
