The Ghana Police Service has placed some of the blame for the public's opinion that it is the nation's most corrupt organisation. The Service said that all of its employees had received professional training and were required to carry out their jobs devoid of temptation.
Some people bribe police officers when they are apprehended for different charges, according to DCOP Kojo Antwi Tabi, the deputy director-general of the Ghana Police Service in charge of the Private Services Organization.
As a result, he claimed, certain Ghanaians are to blame for the charges made against the police.
"The public should also bear some of the guilt for the accusations they are making. They are both equally at fault since the police cannot take money out of your pocket if you refuse to give them any. You must give yourself permission to follow the proper procedures if you commit an infraction and the police seek to prosecute you in court.
Sometimes, even if you appear in court, the infraction may not result in a significant fine. But if you entice the police with money and refuse to appear in court, you are providing a dishonest police officer the opportunity to demand any sum of money because you are unwilling to allow yourself to appear in court, he added.
The Ghana Statistical Service, CHRAJ, and the Centre for Democratic Development have recently conducted polls, and the results show that the Police is the most corrupt state entity. The presidency, court, and legislature were ranked as the third most corrupt institutions in the most recent Afrobarometer Report, right behind the police.
The study discovered that the Police, with a score of 65 percent, was at the top of the food chain, while the Presidency came in second with a score of 55 percent.
Personnel who are discovered participating in such behaviour, according to the Police, are either fired or disciplined.
When police officers are discovered to have extorted money, collected money, or engaged in other illegal activity, we typically penalise them or fire them, according to DCOP Kojo Antwi Tabi. "We have been talking to them, we have been teaching them," he said.
