In order for Ghana to achieve self-sufficiency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasised the necessity of a methodical and deliberate approach.
He stated that one of the biggest challenges was increasing Ghana's self-sufficiency and food security.
But he lamented the fact that a lot of money was spent bringing in goods, particularly food.
"We have been importing food into Ghana for far too long, and it costs a lot of money. And I believe that right now is when we need to start making a concerted effort to rely on ourselves for our food and be self-sufficient.
On Friday, December 30, 2022, at the Jubilee House, the seat of government, President Akufo-Addo hosted a team of Thai investors led by Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), and Dr. Sicha Singsomboon, Honorary Consul of Ghana in Thailand.
Twenty (20) investors made up the team, which was in Ghana to support the Ghana-Thailand Rice Project being led by the JGC and to look into additional investment opportunities in Ghana's agricultural sector.
The relationship and cooperation between Ghana and Thailand in the rice industry exuded joy from the president.
"Countries like yours [Thailand] and others have accomplished this. And if you've already done it, others can do the same by imitating your example. And I'm enthusiastic about the prospect of sleeping with individuals who are known to be successful," he said.
President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism that Ghana will move toward a system of agricultural inputs that will lessen its dependency on agricultural chemicals supplied from nations like Russia and Ukraine after studying Thailand.
As opposed to what we have been using up until now, he added, "and now we are going to be dealing with organic fertilisers, which is better for our soil, better for our wallets, and generally as ecologically benign and conducive."
And if we can develop it here in Ghana, it will imply that we won't need to worry about importing inorganic fertilisers from Ukraine and Russia as much or rely on others, the man stated.
Therefore, he gave the Thai investors the responsibility of making an effort to come to some tangible agreements and understandings with the various parties involved in Ghana's rice business and agriculture sector as a whole.
He said that this will present a roadmap for the expansion and development of the relationship between the two nations.
