Kenyan President Ruto declares, "I'm a God-fearing man," rejecting the Supreme Court's decision to allow LGBTQ organizations to register in the nation.

Williams Ruto, the president of Kenya, has responded to the Supreme Court's decision authorizing the registration of LGBTQ rights organizations.

Despite homosexuality being against the law in Kenya, the Supreme Court of Kenya ruled last week on Friday, February 24, that it was discriminatory to deny LGBTQ individuals the ability to form Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

This followed a 2013 decision by lower courts denying community people in Kenya the ability to form an NGO for the development of their rights.

Speaking on Thursday, March 2, at the relaunch of the Women Business Fund at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), Nairobi, President Ruto said he respected the ruling of the supreme court but emphasized that Kenya's values and religion forbade same-sex partnerships.

"You know me very well; I am a God-fearing guy, and whatever occurred at the court, even if we respect the court, our culture, morals, Christianity, and Islam cannot let women marry each other, or men to ry fellow males," he stated.

The Criminal Code 1930 of the Kenyan Constitution forbids same-sex sexual behavibehavior of "gross indecency" and "carnal knowledge against the order of nature" are prohibited.

The maximum sentence for anyone found guilty is fourteen years in jail.

Ruto has already stated his position on LGBT rights in the nation. In August of last year, shortly after being named president-elect, Ruto conducted a CNN interview in which he was questioned about the matter.

"We have Kenyan law, we have Kenyan constitution, we have our tradition, and we have our customs; we will continue to accept other people's customs as they respect our customs and traditions," said Ruto, who earlier had said that homosexuality will not be tolerated in Kenya.

According to him, Kenya respects everyone and their beliefs, and he said, "We also have our own beliefs, and we expect to be respected for those as well."
