At the University of Ghana, Legon, 104 doctor of philosophy (PhD) students received their degrees yesterday.

They were among the 11,711 students who successfully completed graduate degree programs from the university's four colleges—the College of Humanities, the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Education, and the School of Graduate Studies—and received their diplomas.

Last week, the UG hosted its 2023 Congregation to award academic honors to 8,331 graduates who received bachelor's degrees, 462 certificates, and 2,918 graduates who received master's degrees and 104 doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees.

Adiki Ofeibea Ayitevie, the vice president of Newmont Africa responsible for sustainability and external relations, addressed the event and urged the graduates to aspire to be their very best selves and best wherever they found themselves.

She claimed that earning a graduate degree was difficult but that perseverance was rewarded. She advised the graduates to put failure behind them and rise beyond it in order to fulfill their life goals.

Modernisation

The University of Ghana's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, stated in her speech that the institution was committed to streamlining and modernizing its operations, and that "as part of this initiative, we have recently launched an online student academic records request portal and service fees system, which will gradually replace the traditional paper-based system."

She said that the new portal and service offered students a more effective and practical method to ask for academic records and pay for associated services while relaxing in front of their own gadgets.

She said that the institution has teamed up with Ghana Post to offer discounted courier services for the delivery of school papers.

Mary Chinery-Hesse, the Chancellor of the University of Ghana, urged the graduates to fly high the colors of the school and to be creative in all they undertook.

"I depend on you to continue using the abilities and knowledge you have acquired at the University of Ghana to have a good influence in your communities and beyond when you venture out into the world," the Chancellor remarked.

Titilope Folarin Aina Ajayi, the valedictorian, said the education she and her classmates received was a great privilege and shouldn't be taken for granted.
